PORTAL ACADEMY

Make a polite request

The way you ask matters in restaurants, at work, and on calls. Make a clear request, add please, and ask for missing information.

A simple request

Can I have works for many everyday requests. Could I have sounds more polite. Both are natural in daily situations.

Can I have a glass of water, please?

Could I have the menu, please?

Ask for help

Use the base verb after Could you. Explain the task rather than only saying Help me.

Could you repeat the last part, please?

Could you send me the meeting link?

Confirm the details

If you need to check, ask a specific question. Do not assume you understood every detail the first time.

Does the price include breakfast?

Is that for today or tomorrow?

Try it yourself

Prepare two requests: one in a restaurant and one at work. Say each aloud, followed by a question to confirm a detail.

Check your understanding

Choose the polite request.
